Welcome to innertherian.com, a calm and respectful place to explore therianthropy through free quizzes and in-depth guides. A therian is someone who identifies as a real, non-human animal on a deep, personal level. It's a non-physical identity, not a costume, a hobby or a phase. Whether you're newly awakening, questioning, or have known your animal self for years, you'll find a gentle starting point for self-reflection here.
Each quiz uses short statements that you rate on a seven-point scale from "Not me at all" to "That's so me". Your results show which descriptions fit you best, and each result links to a full guide. They're tools for reflection, not verdicts, and only you can decide what fits.
A therian feels that, on some level, they are a particular animal. This isn't about liking the animal or wishing to be it. It's an involuntary sense of identity that most therians describe discovering rather than choosing. The animal is called a theriotype, and it is always a real, earthly species, whether living or extinct. The process of realising it is usually called awakening.
Therians often describe shifts, which are temporary, non-physical changes such as an animal headspace or the feeling of a phantom tail. Some enjoy quadrobics, moving on all fours like their animal. Many never shift at all. People understand their therianthropy in different ways: some see it as spiritual, some as psychological, some as both, and some simply say "I don't know". All of those are valid.
The community's best-known symbol is the theta-delta (ΘΔ). The delta stands for change, and the meaning of the theta is debated. Therians also belong to the wider alterhuman community of people whose identities are not entirely human.
The word comes from the Greek thērion ("wild animal" or "beast") and anthrōpos ("human"). For a long time, "therianthropy" was a term used in folklore and the study of religion. It described stories of humans turning into animals, such as werewolf legends, and part-human, part-animal figures in myth and art.
The modern identity is much newer. It took shape online in the early-to-mid 1990s, notably on the Usenet newsgroup alt.horror.werewolves. There, people who felt they were animals inside began comparing experiences, and the shorter word "therian" came into use. Over the following decades the community moved through forums and websites to social media. It has grown much more visible recently, especially among young people.
Each guide covers the real animal's biology and behaviour, how therians of that type commonly describe their experience, and how to tell similar animals apart. See them all on the theriotypes & glossary page.
Therian types (overview) describe how your animal side shows up and how many animals are involved: contherian, suntherian, vacillant, polytherian, cladotherian, polymorph, paleotherian and awakening.
Alterhuman identities (overview): therians identify as real animals, otherkin as mythical or fictional beings, and the otherhearted feel kinship with an animal without being one. A copinglink is a chosen, comforting identity, and the furry fandom is a creative hobby. We explain these distinctions accurately and respectfully, without gatekeeping or calling anyone fake.
Shifts are temporary and always non-physical: mental, phantom, sensory, dream, astral and feral (berserker). Our shift quiz maps your own experiences and explains each one.
Inner Therian is for therians and other alterhumans at every stage. It's also for curious friends and family, and for anyone who has just heard the word and wants a trustworthy explanation. The community spans a wide range of ages, and many readers are teens, so everything here is safe for work and written with care.
We use the community's own terms, avoid slurs and mockery, and treat spiritual and psychological understandings of identity as equally valid. We don't make up statistics or speak for anyone's personal experience. You can read more about our approach on the About & FAQ page. Our safety page covers bullying, quadrobics safety, online scams and healthy self-discovery, and our resources page lists trusted guides and support.
Yes. All four quizzes and every guide are free, and you don't need an account to use them.
No quiz can decide that for you. Our quizzes show which descriptions your answers fit best, as a starting point for reflection. Being a therian is something people come to recognise in themselves over time.
No. A therian identifies as a real animal, while a furry enjoys anthropomorphic animal characters as a hobby. Some people are both, but they're different things.
No. Shifts are mental, sensory or spiritual experiences, and the body never changes. Anyone claiming to teach physical shifting is running a scam.
Usually slowly, through introspection, noticing their instincts and comforts, and paying attention to any shifts they have. Reading about real animal behaviour helps too. Many people take months or years, and that's normal. The awakening guide offers gentle reflection prompts.
When you finish a quiz, your answers and scores are stored anonymously to help us understand overall trends. We only have your email if you choose to enter one. See our privacy policy for details.
